Veera Movie Review

Behind the Movie Veera: Mass Maharaj Raviteja is coming with in a minimum gap after the hit ‘Mirapakay.’ With beautiful heroines Kajal Agarwal and Tapsee in the lead, this movie is made on highest ever budget in Raviteja’s career. Let us see how far director Ramesh Varma excelled in showing his ‘Veera’?
In the Movie Veera: Movie starts with ACP Shyam Sundar (Shyam) taking on dangerous local goon Dhanraj (Rahul Dev) and his brothers. As a revenge Dhanraj kills Shyam’s cute little son and also targets his daughter. Quickly Police department provides special security to Shyam and his family in the name of officer Deva (Raviteja) who gets very close to all the family members except Shyam’s wife Satya (Sridevi). Deva lives along with Tiger (Brahmanandam) in the out house of ACP.
Aiky (Tapsee) is neighbor to Satya and obviously falls in love for Deva’s heroism. As Deva continuously protects the family of Shyam from clutches of Dhanraj, here comes one more villain Peda Venkata Raidu (Pradeep Rawat) searching for Satya. As story moves on, one fine day Dhanraj gets a chance to kill Shyam but Peda Venkata Naidu spoils the plot by shooting Deva.
Now, Satya reveals a flash back that Deva is none other than her brother whose name if Veera Venkata Satya Narayana aka Veera (Raviteja), son of Surya Pratap Naidu (Nazar), a god like man in the village of Sadashiva Puram. Once again it’s the feud between good and bad in village. Bad here is Peda Venkata Naidu and his supporter Katam Naidu (Supreet) who wants to sell the village lands but Veera lives for village and villagers. In this fight, Peda Venkata Naidu kills the entire family of Veera including his wife Kabaddi Chitti (Kajal Agarwal) and escapes from the village. Now, it is left for Veera to save his sister Satya and brother-in-law Shyam. How far Veera succeeded in this? How did he take revenge on Peda Venkata Naidu? forms the climax.
Values of the Movie Veera: Story of the film is laborious with plenty of characters and piles of drama but nothing new to point out. Story by Ramesh Varma is a dead line beaten millions of times on Telugu screen. Definitely screenplay by Ramesh Varma failed in every aspect. Even as a director he utterly disappointed by remaining unsuccessful in building the emotions and intensity in narration. Cinematography by Chota K Naidu gave a rich look to each frame making Raviteja look handsome in first half. Editing by Goutham Raju was a pack of blunders. Result is that we have got a lengthy film of three hours. Dialogues by Abburi Ravi failed to generate any punch. Hand of Paruchuri Brothers in scripting hasn’t done any great help. Thaman’s music is unappealing and songs are placed very oddly. Production values of Sanvi are top notch but surely a wrong investment.
Performance wise Raviteja was better in first half as Deva. There were regular comic scenes filled with trademark Raviteja mannerisms. Once flashback starts, audience can clearly judge that Raviteja was a mismatch to the character of Veera. He can never be an Indra like Chiranjeevi or Narasimha Naidu like Balakrishna. He is just Raviteja.  Character of Kajal Agarwal is sketched well as Kabaddi Chitti, it is Tapsee just taken for the sake of songs. Villainy by Pradeep Rawat was routine with ear breaking noise. Sridevi and Shyam carried their characters up to perfection. Comedy wise Brahmi and Ali generated good laughs in first and second half respectively. Among others Divya Vani isn’t great while Roja, Vijay Kumar, Telangana Shakuntala, Sudha, Nazar, Supreet, Naga Babu are okay.
Out of the Movie Veera: Tastes of audience (including masses) have grown up. Mixing the stories of Bhasha, Indra, Samara Simha Reddy and Narasimha Naidu and cooking a pale one like ‘Veera’ with too many imperfections can never be acceptable. When entire second half is pulled with lengthy scenes that never looked appealing, how can Raviteja alone save the film?  More than all these, interval bang was enough for audience to guess as what could be the second half. There were no anxious moments through out. With nothing like an extra ordinary plot and no effective description, ‘Veera’ will be a boring tale for audience who expect something new. For average moviegoer, ‘Veera’ might be appealing only in glitches.
First half was entertaining with few twists leading to a bang interval. Second half is totally flashback with heavy blood shed and action filled climax. Director’s inability to pull the movie towards a logical ending was clearly visible. No way that 'Veera' could have a safe run at BO. Overall, this is quite a weak show from Ramesh Varma and Raviteja.
Vizagsamachar Verdict of the Movie Veera: An outdated ‘Veera’ Kichidi formula.

Apocalypse today: weighing in on doomsday

One wonders if Harold Camping knew how much buzz would be generated through social media when he predicted that Judgment Day would be May 21.
Camping’s prophecy has been around for a while, but it’s gained traction in recent months because of the billboards he and his followers have erected around the country.
“The Bible guarantees it!” trumpets the Web site of Camping’s Family Radio Worldwide.
Camping believes that earthquakes, starting at 6 p.m. around the world, will begin to rock the planet and the righteous will be raptured (if that can be used as a verb) — while the non-righteous (the vast majority) will be left behind in chaos, dying off until the final end of Oct. 21.
Camping’s prediction rests on some convoluted interpretations (“infallible proofs”) involving numbers that make the medieval philosophers who argued about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin seem positively logical.
While the wackiness of people like Camping undeniably has entertainment value, they’re not really as benign as they might seem. In fact, they can wreak quite a bit of havoc on the emotions and the finances of the credulous.
Camping, for example, has convinced some people that planning for tomorrow is no longer rational, to the point that they have divested themselves of all assets.
A retired transit worker from Staten Island, for example, has reportedly invested his life savings of $140,000 into warning others about Judgment Day. What happens when he he has to pay bills next week?
Camping made a similar prediction about the world ending back in 1994, so given his questionable track record, why are people still listening? Well, back then he wasn’t completely sure, he’s told reporters. That’s why his book title — “1994?” — ended with a question mark and not a period.
This time, Camping says he’s completely sure, so sure, in fact, that when asked about what he’ll do if he’s wrong, he refuses to even entertain the possibility. Maybe he’ll hang his head and disappear, but it’s more likely that he’ll do what he’s done in the past: blame the past.
Seeking the truth through anagrams seem about as scientific as the kind of “mathematical” calculations Camping was using, so I thought I might give rearrange the letters of “Harold Camping” to see what popped up.
“An old grim chap” about sums it up.
When I gave editorial page editor Chris Verner a heads up that I was using a story today about this topic, he sent me an email back asking if I thought we should go to press early.
Copy editor Paris Goodnight noted that Friday’s Pick 3 numbers of 3-2-1 suggested some kind of countdown to a major event.
Signs, signs, everywhere signs.
One of my FaceBook friends wondered if anyone would be around on Sunday, the day after his birthday, to offer felicitations.
“I realize we may all feel a little down knowing we’re doomed to eternal hellfire and damnation,” he wrote, “but hey, let’s try to make the best of a bad situation!”
Others worry that they should have taken vacation days earlier in the year.
Dr. Randy Kirby, the associate pastor at First Presbyterian, joked at the last session of a year-long Bible study on the book of Revelation that he would be preaching on May 22 to those who were left behind.
At the very least, one positive thing coming out of Camping’s lunacy is that a lot of Christians who normally don’t agree on much have found common ground in their assessment that Camping is a bit of a nut case.
Many point to the ludicrousness of the idea that Camping — an 89-year-old-old former civil engineer— would be privy to information that even Jesus didn’t have.
“I choose to side with Jesus over these who are predicting the return of Christ on the 21st of May,” said the Rev. Jim Dunkin of First Presbyterian Church in Salisbury.
“Jesus clearly had something to say about those who try to predict, and I cannot improve on his words: ‘But about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour. (Matthew 24:36, 42-44)
“I say that if Jesus says he does not even know ... why do we spend our energy trying to predict? We would be much better off if we simply spent our energy to live each day as if we are ready, being faithful disciples of Jesus.”
Marvin Lindsay, formerly pastor of John Calvin Presbytrian and now a student at Union Presbyterian Seminary, had this to say: “There are only a very few truths in the many chapters and verses of the Bible, namely, how to love God with your whole heart, soul, mind and strength; how to love your neighbor as yourself; how to live by faith, hope and love.
Those looking for specifics about dates and times, he says, would be better off “consulting a fortune-teller or a stock broker or other people who allegedly have the power to predict the future.”
Even if the information were in the Bible, possessing it, he argues, would “relieve us of the obligation of meeting the future in faith and in hope — which can’t be how believers are supposed to meet the future. It’s a pagan, almost occult-like misuse of the Bible.”
“In a world of 7 billion people, tens of thousands will surely die on Saturday, meaning that their world is over. And that's a reminder that none of us are guaranteed another day. Regardless of predictions, perhaps we should live as if every day were our last. That beats living in the past or worrying about the future.”
The Rev. Ken Reed of Concordia Lutheran Church noted those past predictors of the day of Jesus’ return have fallen into obscurity.
“Instead of gambling their time, energy, resources and advertising skills on promoting an end date (which Jesus says we cannot predict) I would love to see them promoting the basics of Christianity: true repentance, forgiveness, grace, and discipleship.”
“Hopefully, all the fervor over Mr. Camping’s date of May 21 will move seekers to look beyond the creative billboards, newspaper ads and websites, and more toward the Bible itself. That’s where God’s truth is found.”
Keith Kannenburg, pastor of Blackwelder Park Baptist Church, said Thursday he hadn’t heard of Camping’s doomsday prediction — but he didn’t sound surprised when I filled him in on the details.
“This isn’t the first time that people have predicted stuff,” he said, citing the Jehovah’s Witnesses as an example.
Without knowing about the details of the prophecy, Kannenburg speculated that some people are just addicted to sensationalism and the attention that accompanies such a pronouncement.
“It’s absolute arrogance to say that you are the special person, that you can pick the date and the time.”
He mentioned what Paul had to say in 1 Thessalonians. I looked up the passage and found this:
“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”
The “we” is important, Kannenburg says, because it indicates that Paul felt the Rapture would happen in his lifetime.
Kannenburg says the majority of conservative Baptists in this area likely believe in something called pretribulational Rapture and a pre-millenial return of Christ — but they don’t believe they can predict when it’s going to happen.
Kanneburg says he believes that at the Rapture, the spirits of those who have already died will come down to Jesus and their material bodies will be raised from the grave. Then, he says, “almost immediately after, those who are living Christians will be caught up to go with him in the air” — the “snatching away.”
The word rapture shares the same Latin root as the word “raptor” — hence the idea of a “snatching away.”
After certain other events take place, in this view, Christ will reign on earth for 1,000 years.
Kannenburg says he does believe that the Rapture will happen in his lifetime but realizes that he could be “seriously wrong,” as Paul was.
What’s important, he says, is that “as Christians we should live our lives in such a way that we believe we could be called home at any time. So if somebody is thinking the Rapture is going to happen in their lifetime...we all should be thinking it. If we did, we wouldn’t be living like a bunch of jerks.”
“We’re so worried about all of the little petty stuff that doesn’t mean anything that we totally forget there are people that are lost and going to hell and we’re too busy and fighting over stupid junk.
“We need to be loving our brothers and sisters and carrying each other ‘s crosses.”

May 21st Doomsday: Judgment Day By The Numbers

According to Harold Camping's calculations, Judgment Day is rapidly approaching.
And even though the televangelist missed the mark once before, thousands of his followers are buying up ad space and taking to the streets to hand out flyers, warning non-believers that the rapture is upon us. It's a lot of work, but Camping is really, really sure of himself.
The media has covered lead up to May 21 from what seems like every angle on the face of the earth, so if the apocalypse didn't already have you down, sifting through all the important analysis probably does.
Fear not, friends. Here's our handy by-the-numbers guide to the most important stories surrounding Judgment Day 2011

New Zealand Earthquake 2011

New Zealand Earthquake 2011

New Zealand Earthquake 2011: According to Harold Camping, the Minister for Auckland, who predicts the end of the world on Saturday, the first great earthquake shook New Zealand, causing Apocalypse rolling incessantly to the United States, reaching San Francisco about 18 hours on Saturday OK so like should we worry Fortunately an earthquake expert John Vidale of the University of Washington says that we will be as follows No earthquake would be the end of civilization He said that the largest earthquakes considered plausible is that it will be twice the size of the earthquake in Chile in 1960 the U.S. Geological Survey said, was the strongest of the 20 th century. He was registered as a magnitude 9.5 and killed more than 1600 people in Chile.
These earthquakes, which says Vidale measured by the value 10 will wreak havoc on the hill, maybe some cleaning along the shores of the ocean itself. Vidale said the earthquake disrupt the subduction zone where two tectonic plates meet with the most likely places worse off the coast of Japan or the U. S. Pacific Northwest. Killers in high, although it is lower, will be China, Iraq and other less developed countries, he added. As for camping he told San Francisco Chronicle earlier this week that the earthquakes will continue until the Earth at such a rate each Richter scale in the world and all of the new organization in the world there will be no doubt the Day of Judgement here. ”
He said that the earthquake will reach San Francisco about 6 pm PDT on Saturday. Christian souls saved ascend to heaven, including those who are dead and buried, while others will remain the land of fire falls into chaos.

The Assassination of Rajiv Gandhi and the Spread of Suicide Bombing

Targeted murders and assassinations have long been means used to achieve political or personal ends (or simply to cause chaos). In the 4th century BCE, for example, as Philip of Macedon (Alexander the Great‘s father) was making preparations for crossing into Asia and at the celebration of his daughter’s marriage Cleopatra to Alexander of Epirus, Philip was assassinated by Pausanias, who had a bitter grievance against Cleopatra’s uncle and Philip. A few hundred years later Julius Caesar was felled in a plot by a group of nobles, and in the last two thousand years plus, countless leaders—some heroes and some villains—have been slain by their political opponents: Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Nicholas II, Gandhi (Mohandas, Indira, and Rajiv), JFK, Mussolini, Sadat, Rabin, Bhutto, etc.

In most instances historically, the assassin hoped to complete the deed and get away, but in modern times a new form of murder and assassination developed: the suicide attack. It was 20 years ago tomorrow, on May 21, 1991, that Rajiv Gandhi, prime minister of India from 1984 to 1989, was assassinated by a suicide bomber from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (who were routed in Sri Lanka’s civil war in recent years) while campaigning for upcoming parliamentary elections in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. In that attack, a woman concealed a bomb in a basket of flowers and was able to get close enough to Gandhi to kill him and 16 others.
Gandhi’s assassination was not the first modern suicide attack, however. The first such attack is usually said to have occurred in Lebanon in 1981, but it was two years later that a suicide attack captured the world’s attention and spread fear throughout the globe. In 1983 there was an attack in Lebanon against the U.S. embassy that killed 63 people and was followed with simultaneous car bombings of U.S. and French military barracks that killed 299.
As James Kiras, professor of irregular warfare at the School of Advanced Air and Space Studies at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama and author of Special Operations and Strategy: From World War II to the War on Terrorism, recounts in his article on suicide bombing for Britannica:
Shops burning in a market following a suicide car bombing, Peshawar, Pak., Oct. 28, 2009; A Majeed—AFP/Getty Images
Shops burning in a market following a suicide car bombing, Peshawar, Pak., Oct. 28, 2009; A Majeed—AFP/Getty Images
Since 1983, suicide bombing has become a favourite terrorist tactic of insurgent groups from Sri Lanka to Chechnya to Afghanistan. One indication of this growing preference is the number of attacks, which rose from 1 in 1981 to more than 500 in 2007. The use of suicide bombing has grown for three primary reasons. First, suicide bombing is almost impossible for security forces to prevent. Bombers such as the three second-generation Pakistani Britons and one young immigrant from Jamaica who killed 52 people in the London bombings of 2005 are almost unstoppable once they are committed to die and kill others. Second, suicide bombing generates publicity. Media attention is like oxygen to terrorists, and suicide bombings receive enormous news coverage owing to the willingness of the bombers to die for a cause and the shocking damage inflicted indiscriminately against targets and bystanders alike—as happened in the assassination in 1991 of Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and 16 others by a woman associated with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. Third, a successful suicide bombing requires little expertise and few resources beyond a bomb and someone willing to carry it. Therefore, for groups determined to spread terror, suicide bombing is much more cost-effective than other tactics such as hostage taking, which requires considerably greater investment in resources, planning, and training. Instruction manuals, videos, and other training materials, some of them available online, have allowed groups like the London bombers to construct bombs with little guidance.
The proliferation of attacks in the last 30 years led Flinders University in Australia to develop a comprehensive database on such attacks. As Flinders University emeritus professor Riaz Hassan discussed in YaleGlobal in 2009, between 1981 and 2006 there were more than 1,200 suicide attacks in the world—or about 4% of the total terrorist attacks. Though they represented just a small fraction of the attacks, nearly 15,000 people died in them—or 32% of the total in all terrorist attacks. Targets were not just political leaders but also military forces and even civilians. (Hassan is also the author of Life as a Weapon: The Global Rise of Suicide Bombings, in which he argues that the volume of deaths and chaos that suicide bombings cause help to account for its increased use. An excellent PDF of some statistics can be found here; for example, between 1981 and 2006, Iraq had the most attacks—651—and the most deaths—6,714—a figure more than triple the areas second-most prone to such attacks, Israel and the Palestinian territories.)
Any violent act seems alien to most of us, and a suicide bombing appears as a wholly irrational act. Then, why has it grown so dramatically and what type of person may be particularly susceptible to becoming a suicide bomber? Unfortunately, the motivations are complex. As Kiras explains, sometimes faith might motivate a bomber, though the Tamil Tigers (and other groups employing suicide methods) were a largely secular ethnic separatist group, so religious motivations cannot be considered sufficient. As Kiras continues:
Studies have shown that many suicide bombers, particularly in developed societies, are not deranged or wild-eyed fanatics with nothing to live for; indeed, a significant number of bombers have come from income and education levels well above their countries’ norms. Another broad trend, noticeable in the numerous suicide bombings in Iraq and Afghanistan, has been the recruitment of individuals who are physically or mentally ill, impoverished, suggestible, or alienated in some way from their society. Individual purposes or motivations can range broadly, from revenge for the death of a family member (for instance, the female suicide bombers, or “Black Widows,” in Chechnya) to outrage against an occupying power (for instance, in Iraq or the Palestinian territories) or against some incident (e.g., the abuse of prisoners at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq) to coercion or even the payment of money to one’s family (as has occurred in Afghanistan and elsewhere). Neither altruism nor anomie figures much in such individual calculations.
For many militant groups, suicide bombing is but one tactic in a larger campaign to achieve strategic goals—for example, tying to force a country to withdraw its army by inflicting heavy damage to its forces or in a battle waged against another militant group.
So, what should we do to diminish the possibility of attacks and prevent them? Unfortunately, because the motivations and characteristics of bombers vary, there is no single approach that will work. Sometimes governments may engage in their own targeted assassinations, be it by Israel of leaders of Palestinian militant groups or drone attacks against leaders of al-Qaeda by the United States (or the commando raid by Navy SEALS against Osama bin Laden). Some places, such as Israel, have attempted to build security fences (or secure zones). Setting up checkpoints, be they on highways or in airports, can act as a deterrent by adding another layer of security for the public. Some governments, such as the United States, have tried to aggressively expand surveillance, particularly electronic eavesdropping,  to try to thwart attacks, though civil libertarians have raised concerns.
Despite such countermeasures, it is quite difficult to thwart suicide bombers, because as governments adapt to techniques (such as the September 11 attacks and using planes as missiles), suicide bombers develop alternate ways of carrying out assaults. As George W. Bush said in a 2004 debate with John Kerry, in fighting terror “[w]e have to be right 100% of the time. And the enemy only has to be right once to hurt us.” That statement has a lot of resonance, but it was actually quite odd, since it was a paraphrase of a statement made by the IRA in 1984 after a failed attempt on the life of Margaret Thatcher: “Today we were unlucky, but remember we only have to be lucky once. You will have to be lucky always.”

Rajiv Gandhi's 20th death anniversary today

New Delhi: Today is the 20th death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and people still remember India's youngest Prime Minister, who dreamt of the 21st century India.
On May 21, 1991, in Sriperambudur at 10 o'clock in the night, Journalist R Bhagwan Singh was discussing the Lok Sabha polls with fellow journalists in the media enclosure. He could see former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi walking towards the podium. Thousands of supporters, mainly women, were pushing each other for a glimpse of the man who, it seemed, was all set to return as the prime minister. But seconds before Rajiv was about to mount the podium, a huge explosion took place. Initially, people thought it was a cracker blast.
Deccan Chronicle Consulting Editor R Bhagwan Singh said, "I remember telling my friends how can these Congressmen be so stupid and have a powerful cracker next to the dais. But then, within moments we saw people screaming, running around, some black, some burnt. We got up and ran and we saw on the right side of the carpet. Rajiv was on his face, head turned down and then we saw Moopanar and Jayanti Natrajan and Karate Thyagarajan who were bending and trying to turn and see whether it was him."
Rajiv Gandhi's 20th death anniversary today
"They turned to see and there was no face! The entire thing had blown up. It was a gruesome and horrible death for a leader who wanted to find a solution for the Tamils in Sri Lanka."
Amid the chaos and confusion, local Congress leaders rushed to identify the shattered pieces of Rajiv's body.
R Bhagwan Singh says, "You are meeting me 20 years later and I'm describing the incident like it happened yesterday. Do u think I have forgotten? It hurts me deeply! Because I have covered the Sri Lanka issue, I have been there and seen people disintegrate and die. Through all the mess, the assassination keeps coming back to my mind."
For Communist leader D Pandian, it was just another hectic campaign day. He was looking forward to putting his feet up after many days on the election trail. He was there to translate Rajiv's speech into Tamil. But, fate decided otherwise.
"I was shouting where is Rajiv. I could not see him anywhere. I was surrounded by dozens of dead bodies," recalls Pandian.
Most eye witnesses who CNN-IBN contacted, did not want to talk about that tragic night. It troubles them even today - 20 years on.
